The ResMed chin restraint is the proven and comfortable solution for CPAP and BiLevel patients who involuntarily open their mouth during sleep.

By holding the lower jaw gently but stably, the chin restraint prevents therapy air from escaping through the mouth (mouth leakage) and the associated possible dry mouth and irritation of the respiratory tract.

ResMed Chin Restraint

One of the most common causes of leakage and reduced therapeutic success when using nasal or nasal pillow masks is the involuntary opening of the mouth during deep sleep phases. When the mouth muscles relax, the excess pressure generated by CPAP or BiLevel therapy escapes through the open mouth. The consequences are not only disturbing air currents and reduced therapy effectiveness, but can also result in dried out mucous membranes, irritation in the throat and nocturnal awakenings.  

The ResMed chin strap is specially designed to gently hold the lower jaw in a stable position and support natural nasal breathing throughout the night. 

The ergonomic design of the chin strap hugs the chin area and distributes the slight holding pressure evenly without causing an unpleasant feeling of tightness or pressure points on the face. The band runs from the chin area up to the top of the head, where it can be precisely adjusted to the individual head geometry thanks to a flexible Velcro fastener. 
 
The chin strap is very easy to use and can be seamlessly integrated into your usual evening routine: It is put on and fixed before putting on the CPAP nasal mask. Made of a soft, elastic and breathable textile material, the chin strap is particularly skin-friendly and effectively prevents sweating under the bands. 

Especially for patients who suffer from dry mouth despite a comfortable nasal mask or want to do without a more expensive nose-mouth mask, the ResMed chin strap is an uncomplicated, helpful and cost-effective addition.

How to Use

  1. Open the Velcro closure of the ResMed chin strap.
  2. Place the padded chin area in the middle and comfortably against your lower jaw.
  3. Bring the two side panels upwards over the cheeks to the top of the head.
  4. Close the Velcro fastener at the top of your head with a light, comfortable pull so that your mouth remains gently closed.
  5. Then put on your CPAP nasal mask as usual and check the tight fit before starting therapy.

Important Tips

  • Put on before the mask: Always put on the chin strap as the first step before putting on your CPAP nasal mask. This way, both components sit stably and do not cross each other in an annoying way.
  • Dose traction correctly: Adjust the Velcro fastener only so tightly that the mouth remains gently closed. Too much traction can lead to jaw tension in the morning.
  • Regular hand washing: Wash the chin strap regularly by hand in lukewarm water with a mild, fine-free soap to remove skin oils and sweat.
  • Gentle drying: Allow the chin strap to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight, tumble dryers or heaters to maintain the elasticity of the straps.
  • Close Velcro when washing: Close Velcro completely before washing so that the material does not get caught in the fabric or damage other textiles.
  • Check fit when weight changes: If you gain or lose weight, readjust the Velcro setting to always ensure optimal grip without pressure points.
  • Replacement for spandex fatigue: Replace the chin strap as soon as the elasticity of the material decreases and the jaw is no longer reliably held at night (usually after 6-12 months).
  • Combination with humidifier: If you occasionally suffer from dry nose despite having a chin strap, use a heated CPAP humidifier for optimal comfort.
